Although the elements threatened to ruin it, a perfectly fine time was had by all at this elementary school in Murrieta. He had - thank God - just enough scopes and clubsters, old and new, to help pull this off. Because there was a globster load of people who showed up. And helping as usual was the legendary Curtis Croulet and a Mr Cobb from Temecula Valley Astronomers. CostCo pizza, good friends, a lot of scopes = one fine star party. And thanks to Saturn and the Moon for showing up. ;) (Plus it was a special sorta anniversary for a couple of the clubsters... but... that's all I can say... ahem.)

Our first star party of the year was actually more of a pizza party. Alumna Brit Karman allowed us to use her fine home to... well... eat pizza. A lot of it. But we did manage to actually get a couple scopes set up so that Ritter and Uncle Bob could show them how to use it. Sorta. The Karman's backyard was a forest and the clouds moved in real quick like so we managed to see a wee bit of teh crescent Moon and... that's it!

All this was in preparation for next week's First Official Star Party at Sparkman.

Notice in the photos below the number of returning alumni, which pleased Ritter greatly. It was almost an Hawaii reunion. :) And see the pizza face girl, and Bob's friend, and Melissa hitting herself mercilessly in the head with a large flashlight ;)

Sheesh. What a slow year, and apparently it's epidemic around the area. Other astro clubs are finding these events few and far between.

This year we managed to have one star party at Cole Canyon Elementary and that was a fluke. We called it because of clouds. Five minutes later it was clearing up to the point where we raced in and told the principal that we'd try it anyway.

It ended up being a great party with lots of people seeing Saturn and satellites and the Moon and Orion.

Weeks earlier we had a party for a Cub Scout group in Temecula. It was pretty much Ritter doing it while Branden and Martin were driving around Temecula looking for the house, and not bringing a scope. Ahem.

Now, just yesterday (18 March) we were rained out of a party at French Valley elementary. Sigh...

Still we have a couple more chances this year. Plans are being made now...
